BIGG delivered a workshop in early April to support sheep producers through the decision-making process and implementation of best practice sheep containment feeding systems.
Held in Eden Valley, eight businesses attended the workshop facilitated by BIGG Technical Facilitator Deb Scammell. Attendees also benefited from a visit to sheep producer Pete Mitchell’s newly built containment yards and lamb feedlot.
Good discussions were had around:
- Setting up a containment area.
- Feeding methods.
- Nutrition in containment.
- How to avoid common health problems.
Deb Scammell said “Having some experienced producers in the room who had containment fed for years was a huge advantage to share their knowledge with those just starting out”.
As part of the program, the participating businesses will also have one-on-one follow-up sessions to help them establish or refine a containment feeding area.
The sheep containment feeding project was supported by SA Drought Hub, Future Drought Fund and the SA Sheep Industry Fund.
