Pilates program strives to improve community wellbeing

Accessible and beneficial to all ages and most fitness levels pilates can enhance both body and mind health. To assist our rural community facing challenging conditions and situations, especially in times of drought, the Barossa Improved Grazing Group (BIGG) has developed the Core Strength: Pilates for rural living program. The program seeks to help spread the word on the benefits of pilates and encourage people to give it a try!

Why Pilates?

Through improving strength, balance and flexibility pilates enhances body movement and can have a positive impact on our daily lifestyle - whether that be a physical job, chores around home, or fun on the sporting field!

Physical exercise is proven to reduce stress and pilates has the added mental health benefit of cultivating mindfulness through focused breathwork and intentional movements. Furthermore, pilates offers an opportunity to take time out from daily pressures and connect with others in our rural communities.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. Pilates generally involves slow, refined, and deliberate movements that incorporates considered breathing guided by trained instructors in small group or one-on-one sessions.

BIGG has released a short informative video featuring three local spokespersons sharing their personal story on how pilates has assisted their wellbeing including; Ian Koch, Janelle Amos and Greg Brady. Owner and pilates instructor at Barossa Pilates, Kate Shelby-James, adds further explanations on what pilates is and how it is delivered in the video.
