The Barossa Improved Grazing Group celebrated the first year of the Incorporated Body at it’s second AGM on Friday 25th September at Wanera Wine Bar in Angaston.
The evening was attended by over 20 producers who helped celebrate BIGG’s achievements which included the continuation of the MLA Producer Demonstration Site Project, which has supported over 20 producers set up and run containment ewes through the dry 2020 summer; the soil moisture project which continued to support producers by providing local climate, soil and decision making information; and a range of other producer events including the annual conference which provided information to over 80 producers.
The highlight of the evening was a presentation delivered by Wayne Hancock, a farmer from Reedy Creek in the South East. Wayne shared his journey with the Mid South East Irrigators Association and the producer groups and projects which have branched from it over the years. What started as an irrigation monitoring group in 1993 with a group of farmers, has changed into many different groups and directions because of the needs of the farmers. Wayne’s reflections demonstrated many linkages with BIGG and highlighted the importance of working together as a farming community to bring about positive change and to continue to look for answers to questions which can help improve the production system.
In addition to the presentations, the AGM formalised the position of the BIGG Board, which will remain the same, with all two-year positions remaining in place. “The Board has had a great first year together with a great group of diversity which helps BIGG develop projects ‘from the ground up’ to ensure it remains relevant for the local farmers” commented BIGG’s Executive Officer, Georgie Keynes.
